Game On: Advocating for Youth in the World of Sports

As a businesswoman and community advocate, I've always believed that the soul of a business lies in its capacity to make a difference. My name is Rachel, and I want to share with you my journey – not just as a tale of personal triumphs and trials but as a reflection of my commitment to enriching the lives of our youth through sports and creative learning. It’s a story that intertwines my professional pursuits with my passion for community service.

My roots are deeply planted in Akron, Ohio, a place where economic hardships were as common as the dreams they fueled. My family's financial struggles were a constant backdrop, but they were also the bedrock of my resilience and determination. My mother, a beacon of strength, juggled jobs tirelessly, while my father, grappling with the aftermath of Vietnam, showed me the complexity of life's battles.

Coach Whitey was my first mentor in the world of sports. His guidance extended beyond basketball techniques; he instilled in me values of perseverance and self-belief. His unexpected passing left a void, teaching me early about loss and the impact of influential figures in our lives.

Simultaneously, Coach Rick played a pivotal role in my athletic journey. He coached our softball team, but more importantly, he sponsored me, covering expenses I couldn’t afford. This act of generosity was a crucial support that allowed me to continue playing the sport I loved.

A defining moment in my youth came amidst a family crisis during Christmas. Financially strained and worried about my father's health, our family faced a bleak holiday season. Yet, it turned magical thanks to the kindness of my fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. Schrader, who secretly fulfilled my Christmas wishes. Her gesture taught me the power of kindness and community support.

During my high school years, I faced a significant setback when I lost my softball glove due to negligence and couldn't afford a new one. However, a kind gesture from my youth sports booster, who gifted me a new glove, rekindled my passion for the game. This support was crucial, especially after a challenging incident in basketball that led to my suspension, teaching me valuable lessons in facing consequences and resilience. Ultimately, I found redemption and a chance to showcase my skills in softball, culminating in becoming a D1 State Champion at my rival high school. This journey taught me an important lesson: sometimes, you don't realize you're the missing piece until you fill the void.

My passion for empowering youth took a deeper root in college at the University of Akron. Here, I worked with the National Inventor's Hall of Fame in an after-school program, guiding children to unlock their creative potential as inventors. This role underscored the importance of fostering innovation and imagination in young minds.

An experience that left a profound mark on me during this time in college was witnessing the rise of LeBron James at St. Vincent St Mary High School. There I did my student teaching when LeBron was a Senior. As a fellow Akron native, LeBron’s journey from our shared hometown to global fame was a source of immense inspiration. It underscored the belief that with talent, determination, and the right opportunities, great things can emerge from even the most humble beginnings.

Now, as a real estate professional in Las Vegas, I find myself in a unique position. This career has not only been a means to provide for my family but has also opened doors to network and collaborate with people who can help me realize my dream of giving back to the community. My passion for youth sports has never waned. In fact, it has grown stronger with each passing year.

Upon moving to Las Vegas, I encountered the challenge of finding sports programs for my children, leading to the creation of the "Las Vegas Parents and Sports" group. This initiative bridged the gap for many families, connecting them with local sports resources and fostering a sense of community.

I've experienced firsthand the impact of programs like Every Kid Sports (non-profit), which helped us with sports registration fees when we were struggling. It's a reminder of where I come from and the struggles many families face. Now, I'm determined to use my platform in real estate to open more doors for youth sports – to ensure that no child misses out on the opportunity to play and grow because of financial barriers.

This year, my real estate career faced challenges, but these setbacks are only temporary. My resolve to use my profession as a springboard for community service remains unwavering. I am on a mission to find a path to financial freedom, not just for my family, but so I can give back to the community that has given me so much.

My story is more than an athlete's journey; it's a narrative of hope, resilience, and the power of community. It's about transforming lives through sports, one child at a time, and building a legacy that goes beyond the real estate market. I invite you to be a part of this mission. Together, we can create opportunities for our youth to thrive, integrating business acumen with the heart of community service. Let's leverage our collective resources and expertise to build a brighter future for our young people, proving that the true measure of success is in the positive impact we have on the lives we touch.
